Buying a home can be an exciting process, with new homeowners feeling both frightened and excited at the same time. As having seen our clients move through the process time and time again, we wanted to provide you with some basic tips for arranging your move:

Start Early: Many people think one or two weeks should be enough time to organize for their move, but end up making many last minute decisions; start thinking about the move in months, rather than weeks, in advance to ensure you’re not forced to rush through the process.

Consider garage sales and donations to remove unnecessary items from your keep.

Check Estimates: Get estimates from several different moving companies while checking your homeowner insurance policy to see what you’ll have to move. We have a quality list of reliable professionals if you need a couple to interview.  This is also a good time to check your primary documents and transfer children’s applications to their new schools.

Six Weeks Out: At this point, you should be changing IDs, mailing addresses, getting physician and dentist referrals, and check on local city requirements for tax deductions and other business concerns.

Four Weeks Out: Start packing, even though you may have boxes sitting in your home for some time; this will ensure that you’ll be moving everything you ned. Also ensure utilities in your new location know about your arrival and have made the proper arrangements. If you’re going to forget something, you don’t want to forget this. Otherwise it’s camping. :0)

Moving Day: Be available to ensure your movers have everything they need and be available to answer questions. When arriving at your new home, promptly check for any damaged or lost items before the work is completed.

Following these steps should take most of the pain out of moving. You’re still going to have to figure out where everything goes though!  As always, we’d love to help you with any and all aspects of purchasing or selling a home. Whether in Dallas, Plano, Frisco, Richardson or elsewhere in DFW, we’re never too busy for your referrals; get in touch with us to see truly what a higher level of service means for you or those you care about.
